S&C extends its warmest congratulations to John D.

S&C extends its warmest congratulations to John D. Hooker on the well-deserved appointment as the Director of Engineering for S&C. He is a driving force behind our innovation and project implementation. His journey has been characterized by continuous growth and a tireless pursuit of excellence. This appointment is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and expertise. It is also a reflection of the faith and trust that the company has in his ability to lead, inspire, and drive results. With a proven track record of translating intricate engineering solutions into practical implementations since joining us over 12 years ago, John’s leadership has been instrumental in seamlessly integrating of an Account Management System across his department and tirelessly driving projects to completion and success.

Incorporating Condensation and Evaporation

S&C presented its paper, “Incorporating Condensation and Evaporation into the Simulation of Multiphase Pipelines” at Pipeline Simulation Interest Group in May. The paper shows how S&C tackles the challenges that arise when gas/liquid phase changes occur when pipes are exposed to particularly high or low temperatures. The energy absorbed or released during the phase change will impact the temperature and pressure of the fluid. Failing to account for that impact can result in inaccurate predictions for temperatures and pressures. The formation of a 2nd phase in single-phase pipelines can also introduce slugging, interfere with the operation of the compressors/pumps, and damage the equipment that runs the pipeline. This paper describes a procedure that was developed to simulate the impact that evaporation and condensation have on the behavior of pipelines. It also discusses the results of two case studies that were performed to test the accuracy and efficiency of the new method.

OptiRamp Digital Oilfield Monitoring

S&C was able to present it’s OptiRamp Digital Oilfield Monitoring for a Condition Monitoring and Reliability Congress in Neuquén, Argentina. OptiRamp Digital Oilfield Condition Monitoring empowers oilfield operators to move from reactive to proactive maintenance strategies. By leveraging data-driven insights and predictive analytics, it helps optimize asset performance, reduce downtime, enhance safety, and maximize operational efficiency in the dynamic and challenging oilfield environment.

S&C releases its Field Cloud Communication Module

The Virtual Tag Server (VTS) Field Cloud Communication (FCC) observes, monitors, and determines the status of data sources. The data acquisition function gathers data from the various systems and subsystems, validates the data, collects the data, and sends the data to VTS. The FCC acts as a complement to VTS where VTS can be running outside of the process control network and the FCC can run inside the process control network to ensure secure communication to the outside world. Features:
  • Reading configuration settings from the VTS project file
  • Collecting the data on the VTS computer from OPC, ODBC, Modbus, and Web servers
  • Sending the collected data to the VTS UA Server
  • Receiving the data from VTS UA Server to write back to onsite servers if necessary
  • Reading the status of the VTS on the cloud and updating the VTS Project if necessary

S&C Releases its first Planning Solution

OptiRamp Planning considers future planned production, foreseeable events, contracts and commitments, and other factors, including ramp time involved with starting or stopping equipment or changing equipment set points, power contracts, future predicted order changes, changing fuel costs, pipeline planning, and maintenance outages. The resulting suggested Planning Form is evaluated for fitness using the following criteria:
  • Solution satisfies all process limits and constraints
  • Controlled variables meet predicted demand
  • Ensure the most profitable and optimal operation

S&C at PSIG 2022

S&C presented its paper, “Simulation of Bidirectional Flows in a Complex Pipeline Network” at Pipeline Simulation Interest Group in May. The paper shows how S&C tackles the challenges that arise when a project requires simulating an entire network, especially when this network contains looping, interconnections, and circular routes. The most significant simulation challenge is determining flow direction and dynamically simulating flow reversing within pipeline segments. System complexity creates difficulties predicting the system’s reaction to a regime change. A single change in one of the inputs initiates changes throughout the whole system and can reverse flow in pipeline looping and interconnections. This paper introduces a proposed simulation method to be used in such situations to calculate system dynamics and to model transient behavior of reversing flow.

News on December 1st 2021

S&C is introducing its OptiRamp Account Management System (AMS). The Account Management System is a cloud based approach to activate and manage licenses across a customer’s organization. AMS introduces a stand-alone software licensing and service model as far as offers, terms, and metering across product portfolios making it easier for customers to understand, purchase, and manage their OptiRamp licenses.

S&C offers two licensing strategies subscription and perpetual:

  1. Subscription license: Software with the right to use for the length of the subscription term. The license is locked to the device and no additional annual fees are required to maintain support.
  2. Perpetual license: Software with the right to use for an indefinite time. The license is locked to the device and additional annual fees are required to maintain support.

Both perpetual and subscription licenses and supporting services can be purchased in AMS transactions. Each subscription transaction maintains its own term length. OptiRamp subscriptions are available in monthly terms or in one, two, or three year terms, based on the offer.

AMS offers many different functionalities for the customer:

  • Use AMS to manage licenses
  • Use AMS to manage users and view usage
  • Submit tickets to report problems or ask for additional functionality
  • Access Knowledge Base from AMS
  • Access the latest OptiRamp software released from S&C
  • Keep up with new products and software released from S&C

S&C at PSIG 2020

S&C was going to present two new papers at 2020 Pipeline Simulation Interest Group in May; however, plans change, and the conference was cancelled. You can still see our papers on “Online Energy Management Pumping Station Optimization” as well as “Transient Cavitation Losses in Real-Time Multiphase Flow”. The two presentations discuss unique solutions to problems that are encountered in liquid pipelines and how modelling and simulation can help users understand how their pipelines are operating and help them achieve their goals in operation and safety.

New OptiRamp Forecaster Module

S&C announces the launch of OptiRamp Forecaster Module, the first version of its oil production forecasting and optimization software. OptiRamp Forecaster Module supports decision making in reservoir operations rely on model-based optimization to find the best production strategy. OptiRamp real time oil production modeling and optimization software goes a step further and takes advantage of the automatically tuned wells and surface facilities models to determine the optimal set of control actions.
