Leak Detection System

The OptiRamp Leak Detection System (LDS), which features new, advanced algorithms, is a computational pipeline monitoring (CPM) system whose ultimate goal is to provide predictive information through a highly accurate simulation so that leaks can be prevented before they occur. This solution aligns with API RP 1130, using volumes and mass balances as well as statistical algorithms to improve accuracy and to ensure system reliability and robustness.

Leaks are detected using standard pipeline instrumentation (flow and pressure meters); rational SCADA may be used where instrumentation are not installed. Leak presence is identified based on a mass/net volume imbalance in the pipeline, whereas leak location is identified based on pressure deviation in the pipeline.

The OptiRamp LDS from S&C solves pipeline leak challenges by increasing knowledge transfer, reducing false positives, identifying leaks and leak locations if they occur, providing operational intelligence by showing the total value stream (thereby making losses visible), and allowing operators to manage by exception. Moreover, it provides customers confidence in their ability to accurately identify leaks and to comply with regulatory oversight.

Digital Oil Field of the Future

S&C’s Digital Oil Field (DOF) solution effectively handles the Industrial Internet of Things and provides visualization and actionable data for the entire oil and gas field, from the producer to consumers. This solution is part of S&C’s Industry 4.1 “Smart Factory,” which may be described with the Big Data Analytics 6Cs.

The purpose of DOF is to not collect the most data but to collect meaningful data and transform these data into dynamic KPIs from which decisions can be made and actions can be taken by exception. The OptiRamp DOF solutions provides the following features made visible through OptiRamp Web Analytics:

  • Complex network capabilities
  • Unit analytics
  • Inter-island model
  • Turbomachinery control
  • Mixed-mode solutions
  • Optimization
  • Predictive dispatching
  • Fleet management
With OptiRamp DOF, customers can
  • Manage by exception (focus on the highest value)
  • Improve collaboration across distance and function
  • Standardize and centralize analysis and decision making
  • Use relevant time data in decision making
  • Reduce exposure to safety and environmental risks

S&C Completes Second Steam Control Valve Actuator Retrofit

In May, S&C successfully started up a 230 MW steam turbine-driven generator unit after completing a steam control valve actuator retrofit. We recently completed a steam control valve actuator retrofit and started up a second 230 MW steam turbine for the same company. This project involved a controller that had run for 15 years and had outdated hardware that was no longer available on the market

S&C successfully transferred all algorithms to a newly selected controller. This programming was challenging because of the drastically different architecture, programming languages, and necessity to integrate the new controller into the existing system.

In addition to programming the new controller, S&C tested the existing electromechanical actuators manufactured by Exlar at the corporate offices because the customer was unable to test them onsite. After successfully completing testing, S&C sent the actuators back to the customer for use.

The unit was successfully started up in just a couple days and put into operation; the entire project took less than one month from start to finish. The project also came in under budget and exceeded customer expectations.

S&C Provides Consulting and Engineering Services

S&C recently completed a project for which we provided consulting and project management services for a newly built power station equipped with four Solar Turbine Taurus 60 gas turbine-driven generators. Our responsibilities included

  • Commissioning the process control system (PCS), emergency shutdown system (ESD), and fire and gas (F&G) control system
  • Consulting services for the power station control system scope and architecture as well as for unit start-up
  • Conducting a site survey
  • Participating in developing the power station control narrative
  • ‍Reviewing and approving equipment start-up procedures
  • Developing operational and commissioning procedures for the power station
  • Overseeing the power station control system development and installation during construction
  • Supervising commissioning activities for subsystems and integrated plant systems as well as auxiliary equipment

The customer was happy with the services provided and work completed, stating “We would like the thank your experts for technical and advisory support. Looking forward to our cooperation in future projects.”

Power Management Solutions

S&C recently filed a patent application for the “Method and Apparatus for Voltage Control in Electric Power Systems,” which is part of our Power Management System (PMS) solution. This solution includes the following features and benefits:

  • Auto-tuned, real-time power generation and transmission models
  • Sophisticated regulatory control for gas turbine generators (GTGs) and for automatic voltage control (AVC) for grid power lines
  • ‍Automatic governor control (AGC) across multiple assets in real time
  • ‍Supports ring topology
  • ‍Real-time, coordinated control for power flows and voltages, including small- and large-scale grid exchanges
  • ‍Island mode to maintain voltage and frequency when isolated from the grid
  • ‍Interfaces with Web Analytics, Virtual Tag Server (VTS), and S&C’s other HTML5 applications
  • ‍Unit diagnostics for advanced, accurate, real-time models of turbines, generators, and steam generators, allowing for a deep knowledge of unit performance and contributions to station and grid operations
  • May be used with any OEM hardware/software platform (vendor neutral)

S&C Completes Steam Control Valve Actuator Retrofit

A Bulgarian company had a 230 MW steam turbine-driven generator unit running at such a level that they lost their controller that had run for 15 years and had outdated hardware that was no longer available on the market. The unit had been down for two months when S&C was contacted to replace the controller of the electromechanical steam control valve actuator.

S&C to Present and Exhibit at PSIG
