New Office and New Registered Trademark

S&C has opened a new office location under the name StatControl Ltd., in Moscow, Russia, to manage the growing demand for predictive analytics and real-time modeling technology in the Russian Oil & Gas Sector. The general manager, Gulyakin Evgeny, may be reached at 7.926.888.2070 or via email at statcontrol@statcontrolinc.com.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has also granted S&C a registered trademark for our logo.

S&C Sponsor & Presenter at SPE Workshop

S&C was both a sponsor and a presenter at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Mature Field Management as the Key for Production Optimization Workshop held April 6-7, 2016, in Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina.

Our presentation “Predictive Analytics for ESP Optimization” presented a case study of how OptiRamp technology is being applied to an oil field with over 1800 wells and was delivered in both English and Spanish during the “Mature Field Management: Efficiency and Cost Control” session. This session, the goal of which was to present scenarios and known practices for optimizing costs and ensuring operational efficiency, addressed issues such as evaluating lifting costs, artificial lift processes and equipment, the impact of oil prices on operations, and economic evaluation/risk assessment.

Coordinated Control for Power Systems

Power plants use local control panels to manage droop control, bus bar voltage, and unit frequency and active power. This individual control results in operating scenarios that may be good for the local unit but not for the power system. For example, changing bus voltage locally has global consequences and must be carefully studied to understand how to properly balance voltage across the power system.

OptiRamp controls voltage, active power, and frequency for all major electrical components, including transformers, generators, turbines, and consumers. The result is coordinated control, designed for a wide range of power system configurations, across multiple units and power plants and a more reliable and optimized power system.

S&C has a patent pending for this coordinated control for power systems solution.

HTML5 Alert Notification Viewer Released

Our solutions continue to move with technology as it progresses. All of our web applications are currently available in Silverlight; however, we are now focusing on HTML5, which will provide more dynamic and useful visualizations for users. HTML5 is also a truly cross-platform solution that will allow users to view our web applications in the browser of their choosing.

We recently released and installed a pilot version of the HTML5 Notification Viewer on a corporate intranet. The Notification Viewer will be fully released in the near future.

ESP Unit Diagnostics Module Released

Electric submersible pumps (ESPs) are commonly used to improve well production; however, they have their own challenges, including operating equipment efficiently and within operating envelopes to prevent damage and meet production targets, minimizing operating costs, and monitoring and managing large oil fields.

S&C’s ESP Unit Diagnostics Module uses predictive analytics to monitor and analyze ESP performance. With this information, you can optimize well production and equipment operation, be alerted about abnormal situations, reduce operating costs, and monitor from any network-connected location via a web browser and HTML5 technology.

Advanced Multiphase Flow Simulation

Pipelines in oil and gas production systems normally transport mixtures of oil, water, and gas, meaning that they are multiphase. Accurately simulating multiphase flow processes is important for efficient oil field operation.

The OptiRamp multiphase flow algorithm uses conservation laws and well-established empirical formulas to simulate changes in the mass flow rate and thermodynamic properties of single- or multi-phase fluids transported through pipelines while accounting for fluid compression and phase transitions.

To learn more about S&C’s multiphase flow simulation for pipelines, refer to our Real-Time Multiphase Flow Simulation System white paper or contact us.

Dynamic Batch Optimization

S&C has recently released its multifunctional dynamic batch optimization solution. A common application of dynamic batch optimization is to manage oil being stored in tanks. Production wells typically decrease production by 5% to 7% each year, meaning with an aggressive drilling and workover program, less oil is transported through the pipelines requiring a batch mode of operation.

For this type of situation, dynamic batch optimization can be used to optimize shipping. It optimizes when and how much oil is released from tanks into the pipeline to provide the best operation and efficiency and to minimize costs.

Dynamic batch optimization can also be multidimensional and determine, for example, how to optimize for maximum flow rate while having no congealing events. Our highly flexible solution helps solve your batch shipping challenges.

Process and Power Consolidated into One Developer

Up until this point, S&C had two versions of its Developer, our powerful modeling tool featuring an extensive component library. One version was maintained for power systems, while another was maintained for process (hydraulic) systems.

These two versions have now been consolidated into one version, providing endless modeling possibilities.

Advanced Congealing for Heavy Oil Pipelines

Crude oil often contains dissolved waxes (hydrocarbons). When conditions are right, the crude oil temperature can cool to the point that the wax in the oil solidifies (congeals). These wax solids can build up in the pipeline, hindering oil flow through the pipeline.

S&C’s advanced congealing algorithm detects and precisely locates congealing in your pipelines. Locations where congealing is occurring are visually highlighted in the Runtime Simulator and in Web Analytics. Operators are also notified about congealing events and their location.

This solution was validated in the field on a 123 km (76.2 mi) heavy oil pipeline.

S&C Hires New Regional Manager

As a result of the growing demand for equipment and system optimization for process and power facilities, S&C hired a new regional manager to cover the regions of Houston, Texas; the Gulf of Mexico; and the Caribbean. Oil, Gas, and Power producers are looking to advanced algorithms to improve the bottom line with changes in commodity prices.

We have also partnered with Torque-EPCM in Barbados to address working with local governments and utility companies. Together with Torque-EPCM, we will meet the integrated challenges of the “new” power grid with our advanced solutions and predictive algorithms.
