S&C Concludes 5-Year Total Control System Makeover

S&C has concluded a five-year, multistage total control system makeover at an ethylene plant that included both process and turbomachinery control engineering. This makeover resulted in a fully integrated control system with a centralized HMI. S&C managed all aspects of the automation and safety system design, upgrade, logic development, training, and startup.

This project included surge prevention and process control application development and commissioning for a centrifugal ethylene compressor and a propylene compressor. Simultaneous operations, change management, and scheduling were factors to the success of this project.

S&C completed the handover to operations without incident or LPO.

S&C Recruited for Services and Skills

A German oil refinery requested that S&C, rather than an EPC, manage a project involving a propylene compressor based on S&C’s strong technical automation field team and successful project execution skills. In addition to developing and commissioning surge prevention and process control applications, S&C managed all aspects of integrating new logic and equipment into the existing process safety and control OEM equipment. The team also provided system design, equipment procurement, site installation, and startup services.

Visit S&C at the PSIG Conference

S&C will present the paper “Advanced Analytics for Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems” as part of the 2015 PSIG Conference. The conference will be held May 12–15, 2015 at Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana. The PSIG Conference brings together the pipeline companies and simulation specialists to facilitate the interchange of information and to advance the state of the art in modeling, simulation, optimization, steady-state and transient flows, single and multiphase flows, and related subjects as applied to fluid pipeline systems.

S&C Has Been Granted a Patent

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. Patent No. 9,008,807, entitled “Method of Large Scale Process Optimization and Optimal Planning Based on Dynamic Simulation” to the company. This patent provides protection to OptiRamp advanced process control methods, algorithms and methodologies for optimal operation of multi-unit plants in large scale processing and power generation industries. The invention framework includes the following components: continuous real time dynamic process simulation, automatic coefficient adjustment of dynamic and static process models, automatic construction of transfer functions, determination of globally optimal operating point specific to current conditions, provision of additional optimal operating scenarios through a variety of unit combinations, and calculation of operational forecasts in accordance with planned production.

OptiRamp® for Geothermal

Flash steam power plants convert geothermal energy into electricity. Steam and the steam supply is critical in power production in geothermal plants; however, geothermal reservoirs have limited reserves and are generally not recoverable once their steam reserves are used up. The challenge then is how to use the available steam most efficiently in order to extend the life of the reservoir. This is where OptiRamp excels.

Find out how OptiRamp for Geothermal can be used at your plant.

S&C Builds Compressor Maps at Ammonia Plant

S&C recently completed surge prevention system design and start-up services for two multi-stage compressors: a syn gas compressor and a process air compressor. For this project, S&C provided all of the site support, schedule control, programming, and system integration testing for the customer. Both compressors lacked manufacturer compressor maps. Therefore, S&C engineers recorded the operating conditions of the train prior to a surge test in order to build the compressor maps. OptiRamp recorded main process variables and the ActiveX visualization was used to monitor the position of the operating line with relation to the surge line.

MSI International & S&C Agree on Angolan Partnership

S&C and MSI have signed an MOU to begin a partnership to take a more active role in Angola. This partnership will feature MSI’s off-shore work in Angola and S&C’s international integrated control system experience.

Total Control System Makeover for Ammonia Plant

S&C recently completed a total control system makeover for an ammonia plant. This project involved an enormous amount of mechanical retrofitting, including replacing nine outdated hydraulic systems with electromechanical systems.

In addition to the steam turbine, extraction, and compressor control system design and start-up services S&C provided, S&C also provided project management and procurement services, working with vendors both domestically and overseas

OptiRamp was used to visualize the compressors and turbine operation.

S&C Completes Work at LINOS Lisichansk Refinery

S&C recently completed a project at LINOS Lisichansk Refinery for four process air compressors that included engineering, procurement, commissioning, training, and facility startup.

S&C also provided project management, cost and schedule control, drawing updates, operating manuals, logic block flow diagrams, and C&E development.

This project used OptiRamp APC technology to visualize the compressor operation. A challenge of this project was the multi-header operation (header with different set points) with flexible unit connection to those headers (each unit could operate with any header). This challenge required additional logic and multiple Station Control Modules to accommodate various operating scenarios.

S&C Completes Total Control System Retrofit

S&C recently completed a total control system retrofit project for a process air compressor. This complicated project involved replacing the outdated hydraulic control system for a system turbine with a fully electronic control system and also replacing the hydraulic steam valve actuator with an electromechanical one.

The results gave the customer tighter control and more flexibility with its unit operations.

S&C tuned the system, provided cost and schedule control, and provided steam turbine and surge prevention control system design and start-up services.
